Course Title: Using Technology Effectively in the K12 Classroom

Fall Term, 2011. This course will be from Sept 2011 to May 2012

Course breakdown:

Location and Time Schedule
  • Three whole class meeting of 2.5 hrs: Sept, Jan, May: 7.5 hrs
  • Monthly 2.5 hr Focus Group Meetings: Oct, Nov, Feb, March, April: 12.5 hrs
  • Online directed activities: Oct – May: 20 hrs
  • Effort hours outside of class: 40 hrs

Total: 20 hrs contact + 20 hrs directed activities + 40 effort hours

General Description

Course participants will be a cadre of teachers from the four districts in central Oregon.
After the initial meeting participants will be in ‘focus groups’ engaged in an area of
particular interest, such as ‘Using Google Apps in the Classroom’ or ‘Student Response
Systems as a tool for formative assessment’. Participants will improve their level of
skills and knowledge in integrating instructional technology throughout the curriculum
and to strengthen and support the use of effective instructional strategies. They will also
strengthen their own leadership and professional development skills. Using a train-the-
trainer model, participants will be asked to share their newfound skills and knowledge
with their buildings and/or districts as well is during the last class, which will be a
showcase for their accomplishments.

Course Objectives

  • To strengthen leadership and professional development skills.
  • To explore and increase the use of collaborative, participatory, and project-based learning for both the participant and the classes participants teach.
  • To increase participants’ skills and knowledge in integrating instructional technology throughout the curriculum.

Curriculum Summary

Day 1: The potential in our schools for Technology Integration; Selection of Focus
Group for the course;Using Google Sites and other Web 2.0 tools with this course for
creating a Professional Learning Community.

Day 2: Presentation by each Focus Group on activities to date

Day 3: Focus Group Showcase - Presentation by each Focus Group on accomplishments
for the year: Sample Lessons, impact on student achievement, changes in professional
practice.

Evaluation Techniques

  • Participants will attend all three class sessions
  • Teachers will make a minimum of 3 posts/responses to their Focus Group on the  Ed Tech Cadre web site  between each class meeting.
  • Teachers will participate in the use of new collaborative/participatory learning/Web2.0 tools by posting lesson plans, data, web site, wiki, bog, moodle, or other Web 2.0 tool used for instruction or collaboration.
  • Teachers will present during the Showcase the technology integration skills and knowledge they have developed with their colleagues

Grading Method

  • A:  participants will attend all 3 meetings and present at the Showcase a summary of high quality lesson plans and classroom outcomes. Consistent participation in Focus Group meetings and contributions to the group online collaboration site. Share their new-found skills and knowledge with their buildings and/or districts on 3 occasions, such as at faculty meetings, in-service days, or after school PD offerings.
  • B: participants will attend at least 2 meetings and present at the Showcase a summary of above average lesson plans and classroom outcomes. Regular participation in most Focus Group meetings and regular contributions to the group online collaboration site. Share their new-found skills and knowledge with their buildings and/or districts on 2 occasions, such as at faculty meetings, in-service days, or after school PD offerings.
  • C: participants will attend at least 2 meetings and present at the Showcase a summary of average quality lesson plans and classroom outcomes.  Participation in at least half of the Focus Group meetings and regular contributions to the group online collaboration site. Share their new-found skills and knowledge with their buildings and/or districts on 1 occasion, such as at faculty meetings, in-service days, or after school PD offerings.
